What is the shank and the vamp of a pointe shoe for ballet? Also, I%26#039;m going to start classes this summer and I need help picking shoes. any suggestions?
Parts of a ballet (pointe) shoe?
The shank is is the narrow supporting spine inside the pointe shoe and the vamp is the part of the shoe that holds it on your foot. For a beginner I would suggest using Sansha%26#039;s or capizios, after all that%26#039;s what i started out with. These might take a little bit of time to break in. I%26#039;ve been taking ballet for 12 years and have been on pointe for at least 4.
Reply:There is a diagram on this website that highlights the parts of a pointe shoe:

It explains a good bit about pointe shoe fitting too :)
Reply:Shank is the inner (hard) leather lining of the pointe shoe. Vamp refers to the pointe shoe box, e.g. how high/low it goes.
Well, if you are starting ballet period, wear flats, if you are starting pointe get professionally fitted by a store that is used to new dancers.
Reply:I agree with the first person. I have Capezio%26#039;s I love them.
