How can I improve my cars emissions rating ? ( '93 Civic ) Can I use any parts from a newer Civic ?

I know I can drive less, ride the bus etc., but for those times that I have to drive, I'd like to have a cleaner car. From what I understand, a newer Civic engine is totally different ( even a '97 or so versus my '93 ) and I would have to change out all the wiring.

So .... have the engines really changed all THAT much ?

The people that I spoke with made it sound as if I were trying to shoe-horn a big block Chevy or a Hybrid powertrain into the car ( in terms of complexity )

In short, what all has changed to newer motors that have given them a cleaner rating ?

No, you cannot use other parts, use only what your car had from the factory...

You could add some slight performance parts like cold air intake and free flowing exhaust system to help with better gas mileage and yeah a lil power...

As the Civic models changed and were updated, so were their engines and exhaust systems,- so many of them are not interchangable from one model year to another...

If anything,- try looking into gas saving/performance parts for your Civic, these will help with useing less and getting more.
Reply:This question is too complicated to answer. I'm sure the engineers who work at Honda can name you quite a few mechanical upgrades made to newer engines. Do yourself a favor and just buy a new car. Don't try to be a hero buddy.
Reply:Your '93 Civic is probably as clean as it's ever going to get. Trying to add new technology to an older engine will usually end up with an engine that runs worse and pollutes more than the original.

The only thing I would suggest is to change the OEM type paper air filter to a permanent type like a K%26amp;N filter. It may give you a few more miles per gallon, and reduce your "carbon footprint" by a small amount
Reply:One thing you could try is a product that a compay called CRC makes called " Garentead to pass" this procuct is made for helping troubled cars pass emissons however, when I work at the parts store for two years I found that alot of my customers that used the product had cleaner emissons for the next year or so it's one idea you could try and it is cheap about $7 for a bottle just follow the instructions to the T" You may want to look into your oxigen sensors make sure that they are reading corectly and also run some fuel injector cleaner.
